Zoning laws have been a weapon of the powerful to stamp out economic sovereignty among the disenfranchised. By deciding which kinds of establishments can exist in which places, communities may benefit from having loud or toxic facilities near their homes, but zoning laws often go beyond protecting people from industrial byproducts. They are used a mechanism for people with power to disrupt and restructure community development in ways that benefit large corporations. Poor people and racial minorities suffer in numerous ways.
