In an economy that implements private property, trade, and the profit motive, companies will periodically raise the prices of their goods and services to increase their profit. This means people have to accumulate more income to maintain their standard of living. People react to these rising costs by raising the costs of the goods and services they themselves sell. This upward adjustment of costs is referred to as inflation. Inflation is stochastic, meaning that it isn't planned or organized, but you can measure it across an economy and analyze the data for it.
