First Past The Post (FPTP) voting systems in a republic generally lead to hyper-polarized political systems, making it difficult for people to find representation on specific issues and sacrifice their values to vote for a lesser-of-two-evils candidate. This hyper-polarization tends towards a two-party system, which makes it difficult for the political landscape to change and reduces the number of political candidates/parties who need to be bought with campaign donations or other quid-pro-quos.
