People are literally so desperate for work that they are doing it for free, for corporations who still turn a profit and care so little about their laborers' well-being that they steal their work. Even though there are laws to protect people from this kind of exploitation, their rules are flexible and allow companies with more expensive (and more convincing) attorneys to simply win these cases. There is little recourse for people who sign up for these internships with an expectation of useful on-the-job training that is replaced by a reality of exploitation.
