through e.g. war and displacement, generational knowledge e.g. methods of animal husbandry, craftmanship, subsistence farming, "old wisdom" (e.g. taking the form of superstition whose consequence is statistically favorable) -- sometimes centuries old -- is lost, distorted, and I can provisionally hypothesize that this is the seed of nationalism: where the iconography remains but the practice and its purpose, the lived experience, is lost
