Lithium-filled 18650s dominate the energy storage market. They are in laptop batteries, drill batteries, vapes, Tesla power walls, you name it. How might we make energy storage that doesn't depend on such minerals?
There are alternative materials being developed for batteries, which could at the very least diversify the mineral -> battery supply chain by replacing lithium with sodium or silicon-calcium alloys, hopefully with solid electrolytes that don't explode like lithium ion batteries when their liquid electrolytes meet air.
There was a scientific breakthrough in sodium-sulfur batteries, which were held up by an inability to store power at room temperature. No longer. We could also use renewable resources like graphene, even by making it from garbage.
The Magnova community says Make Cleaner Energy Storage addresses the following issues. (Registered users can upvote/downvote these connections.)
