Gerrymandering is used by incumbent politicians to secure a stronghold for their political party come election time. One way people can fight back against this within the confines of their existing system is to organize the formation of independent commissions to draw the lines on a map between voting districts in an area.
In Michigan, USA citizens organized a citizen ballot initiative to create this commission, which has redrawn district lines to be far more fair.
