Prisons are evil. Let's abolish them.
The Netherlands is on track to abolishing prison, making prisons less violent towards convicts, forgiving lesser/victimless crimes, and implementing therapeutic methods to heal the problems that push people to crime.
Getting rid of prisons will require a cultural shift where people learn en masse about the alternatives to this system. Treating violence like a disease is a helpful shift in outlook that accepts that crime is truly a consequence of material conditions, psychological conditioning, and inherited trauma.
Getting governments on board is a fundamentally difficult question without direct democracy, and will likely depend on infrastructural changes to how laws are passed.
Defunding institutions like the police would help significantly in stemming the flow of individuals into a system that breeds MORE crime, not less. This has been known for quite some time, yet the system continues to destroy communities.
