About
Community Rideshare Project
Purpose: To organize free ride share access to community members
Context: The community has a significant need for reliable transportation due to a car-centric society. Many people cannot afford or may be unable to drive/own their own car. Ride sharing is a successful mutual aid practice and it can be organized to increase impact and effectiveness.
Step 1: Create a space for people who are willing to be on-call for ride sharing. This may be a channel in a discord or slack community server. This could also be an app that people can download to hail a ride share. In the trashbird community discord server, we created a channel for it and roles for drivers and copilots.

Driver role is anyone with access to a car that is willing to be available for the rideshare project

Copilot role is someone who is willing to ride along to help the driver and passenger feel safe
Step 2: Create a team from the list of people with the roles and organize regular meetings.
Meetings should focus on

Solutions for community members who regularly need a ride

How to handle emerging or unpredictable rideshare needs (i.e. on-call roster)
Step 3: Organize regular on-call rotations. If there is enough capacity in the project, organize multiple on-call drivers by region.

Consider creating a directory of each driver and where they are willing to drive

Consider how to organize ridesharing for a large event (i.e. protest or community celebration)
Step 4: Coordinate a funding pool for cost of gas and car repairs/maintenance for the drivers.

Must be clear on the intention and management of funds
Step 5: Grow as desired.
Potential growth can look like:

Sourcing a community vehicle to be shared (investigate the legal hoops for this option)

Forming an official entity to cover insurance costs for the drivers
